We have made notable advancements in environmental quality by implementing an automatic night mode for our Automatic Stacking Cranes (ASC) in the container yard, ensuring that cranes remain unlit during nighttime hours unless there is an operational or maintenance requirement. This initiative significantly reduces energy consumption and minimizes light pollution in the surrounding community. The development and installation of an ECO mode in all ASCs have also been fully implemented, optimizing energy use and lowering operational emissions.
In terms of energy transition and sustainable infrastructure, we have completed the replacement of all terminal and machinery luminaires with LED technology, leading to substantial energy savings and a reduced carbon footprint. As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we are actively exploring the renewal of our fleet with electric vehicles, which will further our long-term environmental goals.
To extend the life cycle of our equipment, we have introduced significant improvements, including the installation of magnets on 80% of our Shuttle Carriers (SHC) to collect metal and sharp waste, which is then recycled along with other scrap metal generated at the terminal. Furthermore, we have implemented a new lubricant collection system across all SHCs, effectively preventing spills and reducing environmental hazards.
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental initiatives, as we also prioritize the well-being and equality of our workforce through inclusive talent management practices that support work-life balance and gender equality. Our family reconciliation policies are designed to accommodate the varying needs of employees, particularly during pregnancy and maternity. These policies include personalized work plans, adapted tasks, and standardized schedules, ensuring that our employees can excel both professionally and personally. To further support our staff, we have contracted a psychologist service as part of the port’s medical services, available to assist any personnel who may need mental health support, reflecting our dedication to reducing stress, preventing burnout, and promoting overall employee well-being.
Moreover, we are deeply committed to promoting gender equality within our workplace. We have implemented comprehensive protocols, including an Equality Plan, an Anti-Harassment Protocol, and a Code of Ethics, all of which are designed to ensure that there is no discrimination against women or any other group. These protocols provide a framework that supports equal opportunities and a respectful work environment for all employees, particularly addressing the challenges women may face in balancing motherhood and professional responsibilities.
Additionally, in the last quarter of 2024, we plan to further strengthen our commitment to environmental responsibility by implementing comprehensive training programs. These programs are aimed at equipping our staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to support sustainability efforts within the terminal, contributing to our broader goal of advancing the circular economy and promoting green procurement.
The impact of these initiatives extends beyond our operations, offering significant benefits to the environment and the local community. In 2024, we have achieved a 15% reduction in Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) across Scopes 1 and 2 compared to 2022, contributing directly to the global fight against climate change. Scope 1 emissions cover those from sources that we own and control directly, such as the fuel burned in our fleet of vehicles and Shuttle Carriers. Scope 2 emissions are those caused indirectly by the energy we purchase and use, such as the emissions generated in producing the electricity that powers our terminal.
This reduction has been made possible thanks to the implementation of more sustainable practices and the adjustments mentioned earlier. Our efforts to reduce waste have also been successful, achieving a 28% decrease in paper consumption since 2021, made possible by replacing paper with specialized software and the addition of diverse devices, primarily in the maintenance and QHSSE departments, reflecting our commitment to conserving natural resources. Moreover, the implementation of the new lubricant collection system has resulted in a 95% reduction in incidents related to lubricant spills, ensuring a safer and cleaner environment.
These accomplishments not only enhance the immediate environment surrounding our container terminal but also contribute to global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12, 13, and 15, which focus on responsible consumption and production, climate action, and the preservation of life on land.
Looking forward, TTI Algeciras remains dedicated to advancing the Port of Algeciras Bay’ Green Strategy, with future plans focused on further reducing our environmental impact, promoting sustainable practices, and enhancing the well-being of our employees and community. By integrating sustainability into every aspect of our operations, we are committed to leading the way in creating a more sustainable and equitable future.
